The Toolbox
At Higher Training we like to share our knowledge and experience. We have therefore created a Toolbox. Thoughts, ideas and sample materials will be posted and updated quarterly. All activities and ideas contained here are free to download and use.
We would welcome contributions to this page. If you wish to contribute a brief article, activity or quote please contact us with the details via the enquiry form.
What does it mean to me? - A reflective activity
An effective training session will provide opportunities for delegates to reflect on the key messages and content and for them to draw conclusions as to what the messages mean for them and how they can apply these. The following activity was developed for a training session on change management. However, it could be easily adapted to suit most subjects. This activity takes 30—45 minutes.
- Introduce aims/objectives of session – explain that session is about participants having the opportunity to reflect on what the key principles of managing and to consider how these can be of benefit to them as Managers.
- Divide into groups of 4/5. Explain that each group will be given an envelope containing a number of quotes and sayings in it. All of these relate to managing change. As a group they should discuss the saying/quote and then post this under the relevant principle. Groups should also be prepared to explain later how this relates to the principle.
- Review each section asking group members to explain why they feel this relates to the particular principle and the benefits of applying this.
- Ask each participant to select one of the quotes and to consider how they would apply this in their day to day work. Working within their groups challenge each other to ensure that ideas are SMART. And to form a list of the ideas they will take away to try out.
- Review lists quickly.
SMART Training Plans
Try this variation of SMART when developing your training plans.
S - is the need clear and specific
M - define the measurable outcomes in terms of impact on business performance
A - can the outcomes be achieved within the resources you have available including time
R - Are the learners ready for this or is other development required first
T - Have you allowed sufficient time to plan and prepare (for both those delivering and attending the training)?
